Online retailer Amazon has chosen Italy for the launch of its eighth website dedicated to serving online shoppers in an individual country. Amazon has country sites in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, China and Japan. Launched on Nov. 23, www.amazon.it offers customers a vast selection of books, DVDs, video games, music, electronics, computers, software, small home appliances, watches and toys.
As an introductory offer to attract buyers, the site is featuring discounts of up to 30% on most books, and Italian users are being offered “Amazon Prime,” the membership program with unlimited and free guaranteed two- to three-day day delivery, at an annual fee of €9.99. The standard price in the UK for this preferential service is £49 per year, and $79 in the U.S. A one-month free trial is also available, and customers who do not sign up for the service will still get free delivery on orders over €19.
The new Italian portal also offers free international shipping to neighboring territories including Switzerland, San Marino and the Vatican City.
