New York University Florence introduces the ninth edition of ‘The Season’ at Villa La Pietra from June 17 through July 5, 2013. Artists, writers, musicians, poets, actors, and public intellectuals are given time and space to nurture and hone their craft, experiment, collaborate across disciplines, and to create and present new works or the reinterpretation of classics.

‘The Season 2013′ opens on June 17 (9:00 p.m., Villa La Pietra) with ‘Building Bridges’, an international intensive program from five different universities of Art: NYU, New York; ZHdK, Zürich; STADA, Stockholm; SVA, New York; and DNST, Copenhagen, which displays the fruits of their year-long collaboration in an open space installation created mutually by the whole group.

NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ The Continuum Company will perform Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ directed by Jim Calder as part of ‘Essential Shakespeare’ on June 19 (7:30 p.m. Villa La Pietra) and June 21 (9:00 p.m., Chiostro S. Spirito, in support of the Amici di Santo Spirito onlus).

On June 21 at 11:30 a.m. at Villa La Pietra, Mark Wing-Davey, Chair of Graduate Acting at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, will give a talk, ‘Being Me, Being You: Acting, Neuroscience and the Audience’

The ‘Writers Reading’ series will be held throughout ‘The Season’: on June 22 (6:00 p.m., Villa La Pietra) with Dorothea Lasky and Elissa Schappell; on June 27 (6:30 p.m., Sala Ferri, Palazzo Strozzi) with Eileen Myles and Maaza Mengiste; on June 28 (6:00 p.m., Villa La Pietra) with Darin Strauss; and on July 5 (6:30 p.m., Sala Ferri, Palazzo Strozzi) with Matthew Rohrer, Catherine Barnett and Ulrich Baer.

On June 22 (9:00 p.m. Villa La Pietra) Jonathan Batiste and his modern jazz ensemble the Stay Human Band will close the evening with a performance in the gardens.

‘The Edge of Darkness’, a spectacle of lights, sounds and videos by Andrea Cavallari that explores some of the aspects of ‘blindness’ in both a physical and metaphorical way, takes place on June 25 (9:00 p.m. Villa La Pietra).

Other events on the schedule include: ‘Crossed Destinies’ on June 26 at 8:00 p.m. in Palazzo Strozzi and at the Don Giovanni Spectacle on July 2  at 9:00 p.m. at Villa La Pietra, both performed by NYU Commedia dell’Arte students; ‘Baker vs. Baker’ on June 28 at 7:30 p.m. and ‘A Musical Journey’, a concert of original songs by singer and songwriter Olivia Chaney , on July 3 at 8:30 p.m. at Villa La Pietra.
